On Monday, September 15, it was announced throughout the performing arts air that Harrisburg's own sixteen-year old southern farm girl, Mia Smith was accepted as a contestant on the hit show, American Idol. American Idol is America's favorite singing competition, first airing in 2002, and whose sole goal is exploiting undiscovered wishers-on-stars (singers) in hopes to win a recording contract of a million dollar value. Winners of the show include stars such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. This just goes to show that even the smallest of people can achieve big dreams. The lucky winner is decided by the critiquing by the board of miniscule celebrity judges and by the votes of Americans.
Mia Smith is a high school student at Hickory Ridge High School, whose eight years in the chorus and vocal lessons have transformed her into the nearly famous singer she is today. This little champ says "Singing makes me feel like there is no one else on earth!"
Smith describes the audition process to be quite brutal, perhaps too intense for an inexperienced adolescent. However, she arrived at the auditions early and registered. The dreamer, nervous, says," I felt like my stomach was in my feet!" After waiting a ludicrous six hours in a line going around the corner outside the studio, among other hopefuls, it was finally her turn to audition.
Accompanied by her dreamer mother, as only one guest is allowed to attend, Mia Smith says that she was given a number and a form, and was called into the audition room. The prospective starlet was fortunate, though. Not everyone who registers to audition will be able to audition that day. In some cases, those who are allowed to audition are selected randomly. American Idol sure is on top of things. Way to grab fresh talent. However, Mia Smith was one of the lucky ones that got chosen.
After singing her favorite song, "You Raise Me Up", by Josh Groban, the judges decided to raise her up. She won over those mediocre judges and was accepted. From there, she went through even more auditions to narrow the contestant down to six men and women. Mia Smith is one of the finalists.
In preparation for her performance on September 22, Mia says that she is going to rehearse every single day. She hopes to sing a lot of Whitney Houston, because those are the easiest songs one could possibly sing.

Tone Shift: My tone shift went from informative to sarcastic. I achieved this by adding words that sounded like they were encouraging and positive, but had negative intentions. This is shown in sentences such as "sole goal is exploiting undiscovered wishers-on-stars (singers)" and " because those are the easiest songs one could possibly sing". I tried to add a bit of dry humor and negativity to make the tone more sarcastic. It should appear that the reporter has a bad attitude towards the show.
